[Solved] Erasing/editing SanDisk Cruser Fit 64GB that is "READ ONLY" (it wasn't!)

[RHEL 8]

I remember seeing a fairly recent post either here or FedoraForum regarding marking/unmarking a USB key as read-only but I'll be 'dang-ed' if I can find it.
That said:

I started transferring my music collection to this (whatever default FAT version) USB key using the Gnome copy/paste - until it slowed unbelievably!. I then tried rsync, but it just crawled and I'm not sure it copied anything! As it turns out 18 hours later: only about 10-15% of the files were copied, the USB has somehow now been marked READ-ONLY, I cannot adjust or format this key in either Linux or Windows 10 - both complain the key is read only!! Even my "dd" script to zero the device (in this case /dev/sdc) complains it's read-only.

Anyone know how I might overcome this? I knew Linux & Windows 'permissions' are problematic/non-existent, but I never expected to get a key I can't wipe. Also, I've successfully done this very same operation on the current USB in my car and have never run into this.

Thank you.

Does it have a switch on it to set it to readonly mode? If not then it's most likely toast.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Ahh! Apparently "toast" it is then.

Thank you.
