Fresh VMware Workstation 16 Player install hangs at "Preparing transaction from installation source"

Post by baky » 2022/08/29 14:08:11

As the title says, my installation has been hanging for about 15 hours now and this is the second time I tried it (with the same issue).

I got the iso from https://centos.org/download/. Two hardware changes I made on the VM was I increased the ram from 1 GB to 2 GB and increased the processors from 1 to 6 (because I have a i5 96000k with 6 cores).

I can access the other tty lines and see information on some and shells on others. I'm not 100% sure what I should be looking for as I am pretty new to installing Linux virtual machines.

I have included a screenshot of where the installation is hanging.

Any help would be appreciated!

The bare minimum to install CentOS 7 and 8 is 2GB RAM so I would try more. You can also use Ctrl-Alt-F2 etc to switch to different console and inspect the installation logs on the other terminals.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
