Lower kernel version missing from the CentOS 9 stream

Post by yadav_01430 » 2022/07/25 15:05:19

The current RHEL 9.0 kernel version is 5.14.0-70.13.1

I am aware that CentOS 9 stream is a rolling release of updates for RHEL and upstream to it. However, when I checked the baseOS of the Centos 9 stream, I couldn't find the above kernel version.

Is it because when a newer version of the kernel is available, the older version would be discarded from the site?

As far as I know, Stream only keeps the last 2 versions of any package in its repos. In nay case, that's a RHEL 9.0 kernel and Stream 9 is currently reflecting what will become 9.1 once it is released so it is not surprising that the older kernel is misisng.

Stream is NOT a CentOS Linux replacement, nor is it a RHEL replacement. Its entire purpose is to make CentOS seem unreliable so that y'all get fed up with it and move to something else - RH would prefer you to pay for RHEL.

There are actually 5 kernels there though I suspect only the latest two will appear in the metadata and been seen by dnf. They are
[ ] kernel-5.14.0-119.el9.x86_64.rpm 2022-06-25 09:24 1.3M
[ ] kernel-5.14.0-120.el9.x86_64.rpm 2022-06-28 09:54 1.3M
[ ] kernel-5.14.0-124.el9.x86_64.rpm 2022-07-05 09:54 1.4M
[ ] kernel-5.14.0-127.el9.x86_64.rpm 2022-07-10 11:24 1.4M
[ ] kernel-5.14.0-130.el9.x86_64.rpm 2022-07-16 11:54 1.4M
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I don't know what the retention policy is, but in the downloads for CentOS Stream 8 there are 18 kernel packages.

An interesting pair are:
kernel-4.18.0-365.el8.x86_64.rpm 2022-02-10 17:54
kernel-4.18.0-373.el8.x86_64.rpm 2022-03-22 17:34

Why? RHEL 8.6 has kernel-4.18.0-372.*

That is, the 365 was released to Stream, then something was branched for RHEL 8.6 (and turned out to be 372), and the next thing released to Stream was 373.
Point is, we usually see in Stream different snapshots than what the RHEL gets.
