Cheese: GeneralPlus Technology 808 camera not supported - MJPG/JPEG source format

Post by snchivers » 2022/01/22 03:43:17

I have a DM04 USB microscope that is not "detected" by the CentOS 8 Stream version of Cheese.

I have recently updated my Dell Inspiron 15 3000 to CentOS 8 stream from CentOS 6.8 by doing a fresh installation.

It has worked with the previous CentOS 6.8 installation[/b] (which is still available for comparison purposes).
So I was surprised that it didn't work after the update.

The microscope is based on a GeneralPlus Technology 808 USB camera, as per lsusb:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1b3f:2002 Generalplus Technology Inc. 808 Camera

The camera is known not to be supported by CentOS 7, see: viewtopic.php?f=47&t=75391.

Cheese does detect the integrated web camera in the computer.
The camera format is "image/jpeg". The CentOS 8 version of cheese requires "video/x-raw".

Cheese issue 96, https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/cheese/-/issues/96 is pertinent and claims that it will work with version 3.38 of Cheese.

I built that version locally (using cheese-3.38.0-5.eln112.src.rpm from the fedora koji) and the camera still does not work. I did not explore the discrepancy with the statement in Cheese issue 96.

It does work with Cheese-41 built locally (cheese-41.1-2.fc36.src.rpm).
