Extra 60 seconds in boot in CentOS 8 compared with 7 - why ?

Post by rfs » 2021/11/19 22:50:07

Since upgrading to CentOS 8, after hitting return in the GRUB boot selector screen, there is a 60 second or so pause before vmlinuz is read and the line

Probing EDD (off to disable)

appears, whereas in CentOS 7 the transition took less than 1 second. During this 60 second pause, there is occasional very brief disk access activity.

Does anybody know what is happening during this period ? Indeed, does it happen for everybody, or is it something idiosyncratic to my setup in some way ?

Thanks,
Roger.
