[SOLVED] Dell G3 ssd issue

Post by lightman47 » 2021/11/14 18:24:21

My laptop is a Dell G3 a little less than 2 years old with Win 10 on the SSD and RHEL 8 on the spinning drive. Within RHEL, the Windows drive (dev/sdb) gets mounted as /mnt/Win. Windows is rarely run, and usually only to keep it updated.

Of late, I am beginning to receive emails with increasing frequency that say:
Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], unable to open ATA device
After today's email, I did:

Code: Select all

$ sudo grep /dev/sdb /var/log/messages
Nov 14 12:51:52 ldellg3 ntfs-3g[1164]: Unmounting /dev/sdb3 (Win)
Nov 14 12:51:52 ldellg3 ntfs-3g[1164]: Failed to sync device /dev/sdb3: Input/output error
Nov 14 12:51:52 ldellg3 ntfs-3g[1164]: Failed to close volume /dev/sdb3: Input/output error
Nov 14 12:57:12 ldellg3 smartd[1246]: Device: /dev/sdb [SAT], open() of ATA device failed: No such device
$ ls -la /mnt/Win
total 0
drwxrwxr-x. 2 root root  6 Oct 11 18:23 .
drwxr-xr-x. 7 root root 92 Jun 21 05:52 ..
$ sudo mount -a
mount: /mnt/Win: can't find LABEL=Win.
I ran the Extended test in the Disks gui and all passed. The run time was 1 year, 11 months but it also complained of old-age (??) for that test. I just ran the Disks gui and it now doesn't even see the drive.

I am guessing that I should reboot, then 'dd' that drive to a file on the spinning drive before shopping for a replacement. I abhor installing and updating Windows. Am I correct, or is there some command/program that would fix this?

Thank you.

I am doubting a failing drive. This is now happening every day, usually late morning. The system email arrives and subsequent checking reveals the drive has indeed unmounted, the mount -a command reports it can't find the label "Win", and even the disks utility doesn't even see the drive. If I reboot, it mounts and all is fine for the rest of the day!

It happened again today at 10:37. A grep of 10:37 reveals

Code: Select all

Tests of the ssd in Windows and RHEL 8 all report drive is OK. I think I have a smartd problem.

Ideas?

(Yes - I did "dd" it to my backup server).

Thank you.

Just went down again. Neither lsblk nor fdisk detect the drive.

Will know fairly soon - new ssd I ordered should arrive in a day or two.

Well, this morning I went into the laptop to replace the 'failing' drive - to discover the M.2 drive while still under the screw was completely pulled out of it's socket! I expect it was never completely in and the flexing of the laptop "finished the job". Doesn't matter much now as it's now a 1TB (was 128G) and I am currently dd-ing back the contents.
