upgrade CentOS 8 - 8.1

Post by itcorner » 2021/09/22 15:38:35

Hi,

I have been tasked with setting up a CentOS server.
I chose to install CentOS stream 8 as it has a loner support cycle.
I need to upgrade it to Cent OS 8.1 - which is a fairly easy thing to do when using Cent OS non-stream 8.
When I try in Cent OS stream 8 it gives the "nothing to do" message.
Can Cent OS Stream 8 be upgraded to 8.1? And if not WHY?
====================
[net]$ cat /etc/centos-release
CentOS Stream release 8
[net]$ sudo dnf update -y
Last metadata expiration check: 2:17:59 ago on Wed 22 Sep 2021 09:19:47 AM EDT.
Dependencies resolved.
Nothing to do.
Complete!

CentOS 8.1 is from 2019 hence the 8.1.1911 monicker. CentOS Stream is newer, more bleeding edge and is no longer CentOS 8, it's CentOS Stream. The latest CentOS 8 is 8.4 which is newer than and updates and replaces 8.1.

Red Hat announced the death of CentOS 8 last December and it has repositioned from a rebuild of RHEL to the upstream of RHEL 8 - so updates go to CentOS Stream first and not after release for RHEL 8. Many of us view that as becoming a beta for RHEL.

CentOS Linux 8 has an EOL date of the end of this year. If you want a RHEL 8 clone then you should look at Alma, Rocky or Oracle OEL.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

In the link below "nmaludy" says he went from Stream to regular CentOS.
Haven't done it, so I couldn't say if it works:

And if you try it, just in case, make a backup first.
Depending on what you will use the server for, it may be safer to do
a complete reinstall of CentOS 8.4 (or "Alma, Rocky or Oracle OEL").

Please note that whatever you choose, you should NOT use 8.1. It's out of date and insecure. Use either Stream or 8.4 or one of the 8.4 clones or even RHEL itself via one of the free developer licenses.
