Re: KDE
KDE is found in the EPEL package set:
Cheers,
Mike
Code: Select all
> yum install epel-release
> yum config-manager --enable powertools
> yum groupinstall "KDE Plasma Workspaces"

Re: KDE
The problem with this is that RedHat have dropped support, so it could break at some point, e.g. if new packages assume Gnome only.
Re: KDE
Ah!!! Yes it is possible, though you may have to jump through a few hoops on the way.
https://www.how2shout.com/linux/how-to- ... s-8-linux/
A few NOTES:
1) It may be of help to first install ELRepo first before you install epel
http://elrepo.org/tiki/HomePage
2) Where it talks about "Power Tools", you have a choice of two, run this:
dnf --enablerepo=epel,powertools group -y install "KDE Plasma Workspaces" "base-x"
3) Before you do that however it is a good idea to first check Power Tools Repo is enabled. To do that ==>
/etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-PowerTools.repo
open with your choice of file editors (Midnight Commander -- mc -- is my choice of poison followed by sublime) and check the line that says enabled= IF it says enabled=0 change the 0 to 1 so it now says enabled=1 Save and be on your merry way.
Thus the sequence goes like this:
1) Install CentOS 8.3
2) Update CentOS 8.3 by running dnf update This will rollover CentOS 8.3 => CentOS 8.4
3) Install ElRepo
4) Check /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-PowerTools.repo. Check the line that says enabled= if it says 0 change it to 1 and SAVE
5) Now install EPEL according to the article
6) Run dnf update (just a check, but the machine should already be up-to-date).
7) Run dnf --enablerepo=epel,powertools group -y install "KDE Plasma Workspaces" "base-x"
8) STOP!!! SHUT DOWN THE MACHINE AND REBOOT!!!
9) When the machine comes up and asked you to LOGIN before you do that right next to to right under where it asks for your Secret Sauce Password you should see something that looks like a Gear or Cog. Click on it and it should give you a drop down menu that lists all your GUI's find the one that says PLASMA and mark it. Once you do that close the menu and enter your Password, and click ENTER. The GUI that comes up will be KDE 5 Plasma.
Re: KDE
There is no reason to install ELRepo in order to get KDE. ELRepo supplies hardware drivers and the nvidia driver and doesn't have anything related to KDE in it.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Re: KDE
Hi TrevorH!!
You are correct. I went thru Hell trying to install CentOS 8.4 because it would reach a point and throw a hissy fit:
"The following error occurred while installing: This is a a fatal error and installation will be aborted: dnf error unpacking rpm package [name of rpm package]"
It was by pure luck I picked up the CentOS 8.3 thumb drive looking for memtest86, and decided to give the 8.3 install a go. It installed fine but had troubles installing my nvidia drives and kmod nvidia. I got it down to a science on how best to install things without things freezing up, not being found, etc., etc., etc. After many, many attempts I got 8.3 installed, and rolled over to 8.4 the Nividia driver and kmod-nvidia are all installed.
Progress is occurring on openSUSE 15.3. Once I have CentOS 8.4 tricked out -- and backed up!! -- I will *attempt* to convert it over to Rocky Linux. An install of Rocky Linux 8.4 ran into the EXACT SAME PROBLEM I ran into while trying to install CentOS 8.4. Without having done the install --YET -- I suspect I'll run into the EXACT SAME PROBLEM with Alma Linux 8.4. I suspect there is a bug in RHEL 8.4.
CentOS 8.4 is pretty cool, but things such as Amarok are missing; openSUSE is fine and has KDE installed as the default GUI, but installing the Nvidia drivers is a giant PITA. My buddy is a research statistician and a "Must Have" program is "R" . Surprisingly "R" installed on both openSUSE 15.3 and CentOS 8.4.
Stay in touch,
D'Cat

Being overly verbose with colourful language and shouts does not necessarily lead to successful communication.
Alternative Desktop Managers are more matter of taste and therefore less a necessity.
There is nothing surprising in that. R is a very prominent application. Therefore, EPEL has a maintainer who does package R for el8. It would be surprising if nobody would volunteer to be maintainer.

ARGH Matey!! As a Buccaneer, I do indeed use colorful language!
