latest images for PXEBOOT vmlinuz/initrd mismatch?

Post by raines » 2021/07/23 19:33:22

I tried to PXE boot today with the latest files off the mirrors and they are giving all sorts of "unknown symbol" errors when modprobe'ing network modules like 'tg3'

Looking at 8-stream/BaseOS/x86_64/os/images/pxeboot/ the vmlinuz and initrd.img files seem to have very different dates:

# rsync rsync://packages.oit.ncsu.edu/centos/8-stream/BaseOS/x86_64/os/images/pxeboot/
drwxrwsr-x 4,096 2021/07/21 18:21:16 .
-rw-r--r-- 75,613,808 2021/07/21 18:20:31 initrd.img
-rwxr-xr-x 10,128,520 2021/06/28 15:18:29 vmlinuz

That initrd.img file seems to have just come last night. Yesterday my PXE boots were working fine.

I've just looked at those files and although the dates are different, the kernel version matches between the two of them. The vmlinuz file there is for 4.18.0-315.el8.x86_64 and the modules directory inside the initrd.img file has the same version number in it as well. I downloaded the boot.iso from there and booted it and it works and it contains the same files as well.

Are you sure your copies of the files are correct? Do you have enough RAM allocated to the machine you're trying to use to be able to download the entire initrd.img and unpack it and extract it to a RAM disk and mount it? It needs at least 2GB.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I am very confused. It is working today so something must have still been out of sync yesterday.

I see no new files that came in overnight to my local mirror though so I don't see what exactly could have been out of sync. I don't have any server side caching on my web server where the kickstarts are pulling the repos.

Sorry for the false report
