Selecting Drive to install to

Post by AFK_Matrix » 2021/05/12 09:55:25

Hi,

I am currently trying to install CentOS 8 onto a pc with 2 HDDs.

On HDD one there is Windows 10 and I need to keep this. I want to install CentOS 8 to the second HDD, but when I choose the Installation Source option it gives me 2 HDDs, with their serial numbers, but no indication of which one has Windows on. They are called SDA and SDB, am i right in thinking that SDA is the drive with Windows on?

It would be so much easier if there was some indication of which drive had an OS on!!

Thanks.

Boot windows, look in device manager, find the serial number, write it down, compare it to the ones presented in the install dialog, pick the right one.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Option B (to augment the above):
* In the installer choose "Manual" option. You will get to see what partitions/filesystems the selected disk has.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply and I have sorted out which disk to install too.

I have now got a problem in selecting the installation source. I have the option to select ISO file but it only points to the windows drive and has no option to select the bootable CD I am using. Even when I go click the Choose an ISO button it does not show an option to select the CD.

The option to use a network is greyed out as this PC has no way to connect to the internet. I have seen that it needs a repository, but if it has no internet access is it worth me trying to add this at all?

How do I get it to look at the CD for installation?

What iso filename did you download?

That is "boot" tiny. For net install; no packages in it. The "dvd1" is for standalone. It does not fit into CD. You do need DVD or USB.

The boot.iso is just for booting with. You need a network connection to retrieve the rest of the packages to install.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the help, I have finally managed to get the install to recognise the source! It was a right pain to do though, not a user friendly way of installing stuff at all!
