Howdy,

I restarted my CentOS8 install today and everything except for the user name icon and the trash are gone, even from the applications. There only SELinux Troubleshooter and TigerVNC Viewer are still there. No terminal, no file browser or Firefox.

Any idea what happened?

Thanks!

There were some reports a few months ago of an update changing from gnome classic to the non-classic one. Gnome classic was RH's attempt at making gnome3 more like the gnome2 that was in CentOS 6 (and mostly failed at that). It may be a selection from the initial login screen has toggled to the non-classic version which is even more stripped down and ugly than the gnome classic one.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
