Are there any plans to have a gcc toolset 11 in CentOS8

Post by alvaro_palma_aste » 2021/04/29 14:18:05

Since GCC 11.1 is already out there, are there any plans to put it in CentOS8?

Although, to be honest, not even GCC 10 toolset works fine :-(

If it's part of RHEL 8 then it should also arrive for CentOS 8, As long as it appears before the end of life in Dec 2021 that is.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Red Hat did list (in RHEL release notes) gcc-toolset-11 as one of the additions in RHEL 8.5, which was released 2021-11-09 and CentOS Linux did release 8.5-2111 yesterday, 2021-11-16.

Do you already have a plan for how to replace CentOS Linux 8 by end of this year?

Actually no, I'm still flabbergasted on the RH decision, sadly it makes no sense to me and still hope for them to reconsider.

It's been pretty much a year since they announced this and they will not change now. Not unless someone sacks the CEO and replaces them with a more friendly version.

Might take more than the CEO.

The smallest "like for like" sidegrades are probably to AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. Both offer script that does the migration (in most cases).
Red Hat has script to migrate to RHEL. They have now more "no cost" options than before.
Oracle, Springdale, NavyLinux ... don't know about.
Or ... migration to CentOS Stream 8.
