The boot.iso is intended for installing using a CentOS mirror over the network. It contains no packages and needs a good internet connection to be able to function properly. I would suspect that you'd be better off with the dvd1 copy as that contains everything that it needs to do any sort of install without going out to fetch more.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Hi TrevorH,

Thanks for your advice. I have CentOS-Stream-8-x86_64-20210402-dvd1.iso download and verified its sha256sum being correct. The image size is 9.9G. I'm now searching an USB stick with storage size suitable to burn the image.

My experience recently is that the Boot ISO fails to provide a mirror for the installation.

Until the bug is fixed, I recommend the full DVD, though it is a huge download and you need a USB flash drive > 10 GB (probably a 16 GB) to use it. Now that 32 GB flash drives are about $10, chances are you have a spare. I wanted to use an 8 GB, so I started with the Boot ISO.

If you need to enter a mirror for CentOS Stream 8, this is what I used:

http://mirror.centos.org/centos/8-strea ... x86_64/os/

And here is the bug I opened on this issue:

CentOS Stream 8 on 2017 HP Envy 15 (16 GB RAM, 1 TB Samsung 970 EVO)

Hello.

Thanks for your advice.

You're right. Today USB flash drive is not expensive. I have many of them on my selves and I found a Sandisk 64G USB flash drive.

Now I'm facing another problem. My old PC is unable to start, pressing the Start-Switch without response. The LED light on the motherboard is ON. It is quite funny to me. Yesterday I have tested it. CentOS-Stream-8-x86_64-20210402-dvd1.iso was download on it.

My old PC for testing CentOS 8
CPU AMD 8-core
Hard drive - 1TB SSD
RAM 8G

Yesterday I have updated the OS Ubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 on SSD. I have been testing my old PC for 2~3 hours without problem. Now I can't start it. I have to make my old PC to start first.

Thanks

Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x00000000

Device Boot Start End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdc1 32 120176639 120176608 57.3G c W95 FAT32 (LBA)

Hi Tunk,

Thanks for your advice.

My old PC is running Ubuntu 20.04

I have been burning USB start-up disc for prolonged time on Ubuntu
-> Activities -> Make Start Disk
without fail.

But following ISOs which were download about 2 days ago on CentOS sites look very strange to me.

Code: Select all

CentOS-Stream-8-x86_64-20210406-boot.iso 07-Apr-2021 06:21 758120448
CentOS-Stream-8-x86_64-20210406-dvd1.iso 07-Apr-2021 07:06 9895411712
I can't select them to create a start-up disk. Their checksums are correct.

I'll try your advice later.

Code: Select all

dd if=CentOS-Stream-8-x86_64-20210406-dvd1.iso of=/dev/sdc
I'm now answering this thread on another PC. I'll come back later.

Thanks.

Hi Tunk,

Ran

Code: Select all

dd if=CentOS-Stream-8-x86_64-20210406-dvd1.iso of=/dev/sdc
installing Cent0S 8 on a 64G Sandisk USB disc. The installation took 20 min to complete. It is a brand new USB disc

Ran CentOS 8 USB boot disk installing the OS on an old 120G SSD. Since this is test. Installation went through without problem and CentOS started finally.

I ran following commands trying to install inxi without success.

# yum install epel-release

Code: Select all

  Verifying : epel-release-8-8.el8.noarch 1/1
Installed products updated.

Installed:
  epel-release-8-8.el8.noarch

Complete!
# dnf install --skip-broken inxi

Code: Select all

Nothing to do.
Complete!
# which inxi

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/which: no inxi in (/home/satimis/.local/bin:/home/satimis/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin)
Why?

Please help. Thanks

It exists for CentOS 8 - maybe there's no version for Stream:
$ yum whatprovides inxi
inxi-3.3.02-1.el8.noarch : A full featured system information script
Repo : epel
Matched from:
Provide : inxi = 3.3.02-1.el8
$ rpm -qa|grep epel
epel-release-8-10.el8.noarch
