Did you install the VirtualBox Guest Additions? If so then you need to reinstall them every time there is a kernel update.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Well you can use the older kernel.

No, I mean you move the cursor on the screenshot you posted to the other kernel (not the rescue one) and press enter. That should let you boot up and read your logs etc to find out what the actual problem is with the newer one and then work out how to fix it.

I've had the same problem with the new kernel in Centos 8.3 and virtualbox. Centos 8.2 boots fine, but when I went into the rescue mode and checked journalctl I found that the new kernel in 8.3 is not able to mount /boot due to an error saying unknown filesystem type ext4.

It seems for some reason the ext4 kernel module is not being loaded.

No, ext4 is there and works. Sounds more like your initramfs for that kernel is corrupt.

I've had this problem since last week, and it started happening after some Windows 10 updates. Previously I could boot a vagrant VM using a Centos 8.3 box and also had a Centos 8.2 vagrant VM that I upgraded with yum to 8.3. All of a sudden they both stopped booting, just getting a blank screen with a blinking cursor.

I downloaded the minimal ISO of Centos 8.3 and verified the sha256 checksum. I manually created a new VM in Virtualbox and loaded the ISO, I get to select the install option then nothing happens except a blank screen with a cursor. I tried to install on baremetal via remote console using the same ISO and it installs with no issues. If I boot with a previous kernel version everything works normally, for Centos 7.9 and 8.2.

I've tried uninstalling Virtualbox and installing a previous version and nothing works. This problem is happening on a fresh boot from ISO for install and also on pre-existing installs using the same kernel version.

I have co-workers who have Centos 8.3 working with no issues, so I can only surmise something in my Windows 10 install is having an adverse interaction with Virtualbox and this kernel version preventing it from booting.

I was able to resolve the issue with booting Centos 8.3 in Virtualbox. I tried a lot of different things, but what finally worked was fully removing Windows Subsystem for Linux from Windows 10 then cleaning up all temp files and rebooting.
