Basically, CentOS 8 will die at the end of 2021 to be replaced by CentOS Stream.
If true, bad news.
I think Trevor said that Stream is the alpha version of the next RHEL beta.
Time to look for alternatives?

Yeah there are a lot of unhappy folks this morning (me included) judging by the replies to the official blog post. I would like to get some more details on how bleeding edge exactly is the Stream replacement.

Re: CentOS 8 will die and be replaced by Stream
CentOS has always been a binary RHEL rebuild. Having been using it since version 3 it is impossible to overplay how huge a disappointment this is.
After the community coalescing around one binary rebuild, it gets thrown away.
I guess RedHat have been playing the long game.

My take on this so far:
If you run CentOS 7 then sit things out until it goes EOL in 2024 and use the time between now and then to find a new distribution that does what you need.
If you run CentOS 8 then you have a little over a year to find a different distro and switch.
And no, I have no recommendations as the only distro I have run for years is CentOS and I am quite bitter about how Red Hat have gone about this.

CentOS 6 died in November 2020 - migrate to a new version!

Re: CentOS 8 will die and be replaced by Stream
This is so disappointing, I thought this was a joke when I first read it.
Ok I'm going to be stoic, the whole reason I jumped ship from fedora (about 5/6 years ago) was the constant updates/upgrades and breakage, but I recently tried fedora 31 till it went eol a few weeks ago and I have to say it worked flawlessly.
There is an upgrade process 31 to 32 to 33 etc with no need to reinstall, still, once bitten twice shy.
My laptop is dual boot CentOS 7 and windows (which I never use) and last weekend I was going to wipe the lot and install 8, glad I didn't now, so I've got till 2024 to find an alternative.
I imagine there will be more than a few centos 8 users "upgrading" to centos 7 in the near future.
How bizarre

Yes, either upgrading to CentOS 7, or Scientific Linux, or Ubuntu, or whatever.
IBM/Redhat have decided to kill the community.
I'm not a complete idiot. There's still a few pieces missing.
