Zoom does not install

Post by search4workingdistro » 2020/11/19 19:20:00

Fighting on...

Tried to install Zoom on CentOS 8.

I follow this manual and run
sudo yum localinstall zoom_x86_64.rpm
but then nothing happens and I have to press ^C after an hour of waiting.

Did anyone on this forum manage to successfully install zoom?

Running Centos 7, just had the same problem.

Running /opt/zoom/zoom.sh gives more info. I get this:

qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in "" even though it was found.
This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix th
is problem.

Everything worked fine before the update a couple of days ago. Hopefully Zoom will correct this soon.

How exactly do I install these dependencies - yum install what?

I cannot even run /opt/zoom/zoom.sh, it fails during installation.

I tried to install zoom just now for the first time and works for me

What I did was going to the directory where the RPM was located and run this
sudo dnf localinstall zoom_x86_64.rpm
Best Regards

If this is for a personal system, I would encourage trying out the Flatpak version of Zoom. The RPM zoom doesn’t have a repo (unless I’ve severely missed it) and can’t update natively, so you end up just downloading the RPM over and over for each update. I’ve been using the Flatpak version for FlatHub for most of this year with little to no issue. Performance is identical in my eyes, and you’ll get the new versions with a simple flatpak update pretty quickly after a new release drops.

After making a few searches on the web, I came across an application that had the very same error as mine, although it was not zoom:

https://github.com/rstudio/rstudio/issues/4610

The suggestion was to install libxkbcommon-x11, which I did. Zoom now seems to be working as I could run the usual zoom test, which I could not even do before.

Interestingly enough, this library is not one listed in the dependencies which must be satisfied...

I did yum install libxkbcommon-x11.i686 and it freezed the same way - nothing is happening and no command prompt.

I think libxkbcommon-x11.i686 is 32 bit, maybe you could try the 64 bit version?
