kernel-rt-kvm in RealTime (RT) repository

Post by AlexisMac » 2020/09/15 10:02:15

In the July newsletter https://blog.centos.org/2020/07/centos- ... 2020-2007/ a dedicated Realtime repository has been announced.
I take a look at this repository but I didn't find the kernel-rt-kvm version of Kernel.
This version is available in the centos 7 RT reporsitory, is there any reason to this absence ?
Is it linked to this alert : https://lwn.net/Articles/818903/ ?

Thank you

I second this request. Been searching for kernel-rt-kvm too for CentOS 8, on appstream.
I tried a Fedora kernel from planet CCRMA on CentOS 8, but my experience turned out to be unstable.

Any chances we'll see a kernel-rt-kvm or even a kernel-rt with kvm kmod/dkms ?

Best regards.

Since this is about Stream, I would suggest you raise a bug ticket to ask about its status. I see from the kernel-rt spec file for Stream that there is a -kvm subpackage but it is only built if the build is run with a particular define. Whether the lack of that define is intentional or deliberate is not something that anyone in CentOS knows.

CentOS Stream is not really CentOS at all. It's an alpha version of the next point release of RHEL - currently it's an alpha copy of RHEL 8.3. It's not a fit thing to run in production. To ask about it you will need to raise a ticket on bugzilla.redhat.com in the RHEL 8 section, I believe there is a CentOS Stream sub-category. Create a bz entry and see if it gets closed with "Working as designed" or "Oops, we forgot".

@TrevorH Thanks for the guidance.

Unfortunately, I didn't find any "centos" nor "stream" sub-category in the RHEL 8 section of Redhat's bugzilla.
I've tried to google around "bugzilla centos stream" but could only find a couple of bug reports, related to ovirt and other components, none of them being the OS itself.

So I guess CentOS stream bugs must be declared elsewhere maybe ?

Best regards.

I opened this ticket https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=17737 in the kernel category because it's seems that the kernel-rt has been compiled with KVM options activated but the modules kvm_intel kvm_amd hasn't been packaged with the kernel-rt-kvm.

There is no point in opening tickets on bugs.centos.org for Stream related problems. The people that buiuld Stream do not even have accounts on bugs.centos.org to be able to read them. Stream is handled via bugzilla.redhat.com, select Red Hat then Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and then in the Version drop down, the last entry (for me 30s ago) is "CentOS Stream".

Ticket on bugzilla.redhat.com https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1882008
RH answer : "Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Real Time 8 does not support KVM"

So why the kernel is built with KVM enabled :(
IS there any project to have kernel rt supported by the community ?
