xdvi does not show eps figure. Cannot use centos 8 for now

Post by centguy » 2020/09/03 13:49:01

Centos 6.x is rock stable unfortunately it is going to died.

Now, I install CentOS8 and install of texlive-* stuff
to overcome all weird problems along the way.

Now, the final hurdle.. but xdvi does not show eps files. Google and found this problem is seems to be
unresolved. Hence I cannot use this CentOS 8 for now..

The xdvi program from TeX Live 2020 properly displays eps files with ghostscript 9.25 as included in RHEL/CentOS 8.

I suggest you install the original TeX Live from https://www.tug.org/texlive/ instead of using the outdated and grossly incomplete package set from RHEL/CentOS.

After waiting for one year, I am still waiting for the solution. This problem seems to hit most newer Linux distros.

Some people claim to have solved it.

So I am on CentOS 7 for as long as possible or give up latex/eps combination one day.

Actually I take it back: The current Debian 11 and Ubuntu 20 have no problem.

ghostscript-x/focal-updates,focal-security,now 9.50~dfsg-5ubuntu4.3 amd64 [installed,automatic]
ghostscript/focal-updates,focal-security,now 9.50~dfsg-5ubuntu4.3 amd64 [installed,automatic]

ghostscript-x (9.53.3~dfsg-7+deb11u1)

The CentOS 7 does not have this problem:
ghostscript-fonts-5.50-32.el7.noarch
ghostscript-cups-9.25-5.el7.x86_64
ghostscript-9.25-5.el7.x86_64

But CentOS 8 seems to be on a slightly newer version than CentOS 7.
ghostscript-9.27-1.el8.x86_6
ghostscript-x11-9.27-1.el8.x86_64

I strongly believe ghostscript-x or ghostscript-x11 have to be of slightly higher version to make it work.

As I have already told you more than a year ago, the problem is the outdated version of xdvi that RH ships. A description of the problem and a patch can be found here: https://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bug ... 01810.html

If you want to do something constructive, file a bug at https://bugzilla.redhat.com and make RH apply this patch.
