If you install VirtualBox and create a virtual machine with a Linux distro, is the installation stable ?
Done. VirtualBox 6.1 under Windows 10 running Centos 8.2 without issues.

Did you try another usb stick yet?
I installed Windows 10 using the same stick I tried to install Centos 8.2 with, and it was fine. I did use a different stick to install latest Ubuntu and Mint, and both had issues (could complete installation but gnome locked up within 20-30 seconds of use).

The Mobo chipset is pretty new I think (Intel H470). Is CentOS 8 expected to support it ? How does Centos normally support new hardware made after the O/S has been released ? The line thrown around is "while it hasn't always been the case, these days Linux will run on any new or reasonably new hardware you can get your hands on".

Hi,

We have the same/similar motherboard & CPU combinations @work, and experience the same problem as the OP but with CentOS 7.8:

Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. -/- H470M DS3H (BIOS: F4b - 06/22/2020)
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700 CPU @ 2.90GHz

My coworker tried upgrading/downgrading the BIOS without success, ended up installing on a system with a different mobo, updating the O.S. and transferring the disk to the new system.

It works fine but CentOS 7.8's kernel (3.10.0-1127.19.1.el7.x86_64) doesn't recognize the onboard NIC so we had to also install kmod-e1000e-3.8.4-2.el7_8 from elrepo.org.

We have 3 systems installed that way and the've been working fine for the last few days.

Hi, I bought a new pc with motherboard Gigabyte H470M DS3H (intel i9 10th gen, 32 GB RAM) and I was not able to successfully install Ubuntu 20 nor ubuntu 16 (from pendrive). In both cases when chosen installation and automatic downloading ubuntu updates the system got frozen in the middle of the installation. I have also had instability before, when setting up HD partitions. I only was able to install Ubuntu 20 when chosen installing offline, but when reestablished Internet and restarted, the system got frozen right after entering the user account. I did this many times without success.
I have the same symptoms as other have had when tried to install Ubuntu, ass well as with CentOS. So it looks that the motherboard Gigabyte H470M DS3H might be related. It is worth noting that the manufacturer does not give support for Linux OS, and now I do not now if there is a way to go around this problem. Does anyone have heard about this problem? or how to fix it?
Thank you

A few years ago I bought a PC based on a Gigbyte board (GB-BXBT-2807). My main machine was by then running C7.1 or thereabouts. The GB board refused to boot and I had to install C6.<something>. After a couple of years I was able to install about 7.5 on the GB machine. So - be aware of GB machines, they may not work on recent kernels. Try again in 2022? :o
