Installation problems CentOS 8 and 10th Gen Intel

Post by gmx » 2020/08/20 00:14:01

Hi!

I am trying to install CentOS 8 on a new desktop machine, very simple configuration:
  • Gigabyte H470M DS3H motherboard
  • 16 GB RAM
  • Intel i7-10700 (onboard Intel UHD 630)
  • SSD
  • Wifi PCIe Card
Bootable USB CentOS 8 installer never completes boot sequence (installer GUI never presents). Eventually dumps out to a shell with an error about "Failed to start Switch Root".

Console output is similar to shown here:
https://access.redhat.com/solutions/3438961

I then tried Fedora 32 installer, and it gets to the Installation GUI but CPU seems to be working very hard (possibly max-ing), mouse eventually stops responding, and cannot proceed with installation.

I then tried latest Ubuntu installer, in Live mode and it boots but very quickly the desktop locks up / becomes unresponsive, and hard reset is required.

So my best guess is something critical (eg chipset, CPU model) is not supported in the kernel, but this is not my area of expertise. The BIOS screen looks healthy / normal.

Can anyone confirm that the hardware configuration is / should be supported by recent Linux distros ? Or otherwise shed light on why I can't get a system running?

Many thanks
gmx

How did you create your USB stick?

Disabled BIOS "Windows O/S" setting (chose "other" operating system). Still no dice. But thank you for the tip.

Have tried a fair variety of linux', both live and installation, and all exhibit fairly serious issues. My next step is to install Windows 10 and see if it is functional, and take it from there.

Still can't find anything that would tell me which distro+version should be compatible with the very small footprint of this system (Mobo, CPU + onboard GPU, SSD, RAM, PCIe MOBO). Or is the expectation that all and any distros should work ?

Perhaps try memtest86+ first and check the hardware.

Thanks TrevorH for the suggestion.

I did install Windows 10 and it is running "perfectly". Device Manager reports that all hardware is detected and functioning.

Not sure how to proceed.

If you install VirtualBox and create a virtual machine with a Linux distro, is the installation stable ?
