Well I got lots of hits on your error message on Google and the first ones I read about were pointing at a locale problem. I don't think that applies in your case so I'll leave you to consult Google and see what else you can find.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
