Updating Subscription Management repositories.
Unable to read consumer identity
This system is not registered to Red Hat Subscription Management. You can use subscription-manager to register.

It doesn't. No subscription is required.

One of the subscription-manager* packages probably does add that blurp.
However, I have:

Code: Select all

$ sudo dnf list subs*
Last metadata expiration check: 0:52:44 ago on Wed 24 Jun 2020 12:36:30 PM EEST.
Installed Packages
subscription-manager.x86_64 1.26.17-1.el8_2 @BaseOS
subscription-manager-initial-setup-addon.x86_64 1.26.17-1.el8_2 @AppStream
subscription-manager-rhsm-certificates.x86_64 1.26.17-1.el8_2 @BaseOS
Available Packages
subscription-manager-cockpit.noarch 1.26.17-1.el8_2 BaseOS
subscription-manager-migration.x86_64 1.26.17-1.el8_2 AppStream
subscription-manager-migration-data.noarch 2.0.51-1 AppStream
subscription-manager-plugin-ostree.x86_64 1.26.17-1.el8_2 BaseOS
but no blurb nor recollection of explicitly disabling it.

Recent update to docker on CentOS 7 had increased dependency on subs* and that did activate the blurb there.

Some packages apparently use functionality that is packed into the subs* packages and CentOS does not refactor that out.

Hmm, looks like a bit more wide-spread than i thought. it seems benign, and doesn't seem to stop me from using yum/dnf, so i may just ignore it.

Yes it keeps coming back.
There's a subscription-manager (or something like that) in the yum.repos.d directory. I just switch that repository off.

At some point I may make the the file immutable so yum can't overwrite it. I mean you just update and there you go again. Is this an advertising campaign? Do we want people to not use CentOS and/or pay Redhat?

If you don't want it, exclude it. It's in the base repos so you can't just disable those.
