Just updated: no longer finds SWAP, drops to emergency mode

Post by travis_farmer » 2020/06/23 04:56:34

i set my server to update last night, and went to bed. when i woke up, about an hour ago, my server was unreachable by any network means.
checked the local terminal to find it was in emergency mode, and could not find the SWAP. i can't continue boot, not sure what my options are here, but this is not a good thing to wake up to.

my suspicion is this: during install, i had to side-load a driver for my Dell Poweredge R710 RAID controller. suppose that driver got mangled in the update?

Thanks in advance for any help,
~Travis

updating my CentOS 8 laptop, just to see if it is a software update issue, or hardware...

Laptop updated just fine, so it must be something specific to my server hardware/software.

any thoughts or ideas?

i think there were about 400+ packages that updated, so no telling exactly what one is the real issue. i would very much not like to re-install, but several things here depend on it, such as my VoIP/SIP phone system (for FTP provisioning), NTP for several devices, and 99% of my data.

i fully understand that as a free forum, none of you are job-obligated to help anybody, and some guy begging for help with very few details given is about the same as possibly opening the metaphorical "can of worms". ;)
i am slightly panicking here, and just need assurance that it can potentially be fixed without having to re-install everything. not even sure if i can find the driver disk i used to side-load in my RAID controller card, if i did have to re-install.

If it's the RAID controller module then you should be able to boot the old kernels.

...
ok, many thanks!, i forgot about that. it is booted, so now i just have to trace what went wrong. but it should be easier now that i am not in emergency mode.

If you installed the RAID controller driver from ELRepo using one of their kmod packages then you need to make sure that the elrepo-release package is installed and the repo is enabled and then when you yum update in future, it ought to pull in the updated kmod from ELRepo at the same time.

just enabled the repos, re-ran update, and it pulled the new RAID card drivers. i will reboot, and report back, hopefully with success. :D

let me clarify, the recovery kernel works.

the megaraid_sas.ko module seems to be completely missing now. any way to load it in in recovery mode? dnf won't work, as there doesn't seem to be any network connection in recovery mode.
