How to enable core dump in centos 8

Post by chenmimi » 2020/06/03 20:38:07

Hi All,

Recently, I installed CentOS-8.1.1911-x86_64-dvd1 as a virtual system on a 64bit machine by VMware Workstation 12
.
I found that one program crashed and I wanted to know the reason.
However, I can not have a core dump file produced when the error happens.
And I tried the following suggested methods without any success. This methods are shown below, such as
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=52820&p=223690&hil ... le#p223690
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=43577&p=186060&hil ... le#p186060

Any helps would be highly appreciated

Thanks,
Chen, mimi

Create a directory /var/coredumps with the permission set to 777.
Create /etc/sysctl.d/core.conf with the following entries: ...
Create a directory /etc/security/limits.d/core.conf with the following entries: ...
Uncomment the entry of DefaultLimitCORE in /etc/systemd/system. ...
Run the command ' systemctl daemon-reexec'

Dear Watson205,

Thanks for your suggestions.
Just now, I wanted to follow your suggestions. However, something was missing.
Would you like to show the detail of the following ...

Create /etc/sysctl.d/core.conf with the following entries: ...
Create a directory /etc/security/limits.d/core.conf with the following entries: ...
Uncomment the entry of DefaultLimitCORE in /etc/systemd/system. ...

In addition, /etc/systemd/system is a directory. Would you like to show how to Uncomment?

Moreover, I attached some information as the following.

[root@localhost user]# ls /etc/security/limits.d/core.conf
[root@localhost user]# ls /etc/systemd/system
basic.target.wants nfs-idmapd.service.requires
bluetooth.target.wants nfs-mountd.service.requires
dbus-org.bluez.service nfs-server.service.requires
dbus-org.fedoraproject.FirewallD1.service printer.target.wants
dbus-org.freedesktop.Avahi.service remote-fs.target.wants
dbus-org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service rpc-gssd.service.requires
dbus-org.freedesktop.nm-dispatcher.service rpc-statd-notify.service.requires
dbus-org.freedesktop.timedate1.service rpc-statd.service.requires
default.target sockets.target.wants
display-manager.service sysinit.target.wants
getty.target.wants syslog.service
graphical.target.wants systemd-timedated.service
multi-user.target.wants timers.target.wants
network-online.target.wants vmtoolsd.service.requires
