Instead of a Red Hat version. Also how do I download and configure it for the purpose of the exam?

With the exception of things like RHN and subscriptions, CentOS is a rebuild of RHEL so anything that can be done on RHEL ought ot be possible on CentOS too. Downloads are done from the download pages on www.centos.org but as for configuration, you'd have to ask the people that make the course what they require.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

CentOS 5 is dead, do not use it.
