CentOS 8 running under Qemu - can't log in, very slow

Post by zitsky » 2020/03/25 14:32:07

Sorry for the really stupid question. Qemu is very slow running on an i5 processor. It's a work machine and I don't have admin access. So this was an experiment. But the thing is so slow that I can't figure out the right way to log in. I have a VM running in graphical mode. Shows time and date that's it.

EDIT: Spacebar seems to work... but very slow. I was running virtualbox until my helpdesk did something to my system to break it. I've never had admin access so no idea what they did.

qemu or qemu-kvm? Run ps fax | grep qemu-kvm on the host and if it doesn't show any qemu-kvm process then it's likely you're not using KVM which means it's emulating everything and will be glacially slow. Also check your BIOS and make sure that VT-x (Intel) is enabled and check /proc/cpuinfo on the host to see if it lists vmx (Intel) or svm (AMD) in the cpuflags lines.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

CentOS 5 is dead, do not use it.
