rsync question

Post by wp.rauchholz » 2020/03/16 15:11:24

I am backing up my data using the following command to an USB:
rsync -vrutz --modify-window=1 --delete <source> <destination>.

This first time I backed up all went ok, but with the 2nd time I get the following message:
rsync: failed to set times on "/run/media/....: Read-only file system (30)
rsync: mkstemp "/run/media/... failed: Read-only file system (30)

Effectively I cannot change the file systems attribute. But I do not understand why. I did not set the filesystem read only, nor is there a possibility on the USB stick itself to block the USB stick.
chmod: changing permissions of './Desktop': Read-only file system

Any idea what this is? Thanks for your help.

It means your USB stick has gone readonly. Most likely it got an i/o error and the system set it so. Or you removed it (or it fell out) and the system hasn't completely detached it properly. Remove it and plug it back in. Also check your logs to see why it happened.
