software update notification is "wrong" -- false alarms about updates

Post by iwishitwouldwork » 2020/02/12 21:03:19

centos 8
Gnome desktop.
X86

this problem turned up after i freshly installed centos 8.
The gnome pop-up "there are software updates available"
comes up. I click on it to see what's new -- and it tells me there's
nothing new. ie, it says it's up to date. yum check-update also says
the software is up to date.

I am NOT trying to turn off the pop-up. I just want to fix the false
alarms. Failing that, I'd like to know why I'm getting the false alarms.

Won't solve your problem, but "yum" is now "dnf" in "8".
Remember - importing/building packages will likely "byte you in the butt" come update time, long after you'd forgotten you did that! Use repos whenever possible.

But yum is a symlink to dnf and all the RH docs say to use yum.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!
CentOS 5 has been EOL for nearly 3 years and should no longer be used for anything!

I've seen this for (quite a long) time in Fedora. I think what's happening is that gnome-software updates and "sees" new packages. I do dnf|yum update and install them. I get the notification, until sometime later, gnome-software updates and "realises" that those packages have been updated. I think it's a caching issue.

Yeah, it figures to be caching. But Centos 7 didn't do this. That is,
Centos 7 didn't constantly spew false alarms.

OTOH, I think I have more repos "active" under 8 than I did under 7.
Part of that is because Centos 8 has more repos than 7. So it could
be something about the repositories that is hyperactive.... Dunno.

Ah, well, guess I'll just live with it.
