Is there any desktop alternative to Gnome?

Post by taylorkh » 2019/09/29 13:39:43

The subject says it all. I cannot find Mate nor Xfce.

TIA,

Ken

Cheers,
Mike

P.S. But to answer, no there is not. At least in the first party supported repos (base/appstreams). All other desktop environments are in EPEL, and most have been waiting for the C8 release to rebuild.

Thanks Mike,

I figured as much. I have been busy fighting issues with the 7.6 -> 7.7 upgrade so I am not planning to be an early adopter of 8. Still I thought I might have a look. The latest Gnome is worse than the last Gnome I came across which... Gnome has not been worth a darn since 2. That is why I use Mate

CentOS 7 has another 4 years of support so I will be patient.

Te repo is online

There will be more desktops coming to EPEL, some may already be in a repo called EPEL-Playground which is installed (disabled) by the epel-release package.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

Gnome 3 and its terrible "Mac-like" user interface is pretty bad for power users, developers, devops and sysops. Lots of people abandoned Fedora due to Gnome 3 and went with other distros, at least these days there are Fedora Spins with alternative desktops.

I understand that RedHat has its own agenda for using this terrible user interface, but they should consider having at least one alternative available by default.

Lets not force people away from CentOS...
