Alternative desktop environment?

Post by gioir » 2019/09/26 13:42:36

Hello,
CentOS 8 has the Gnome desktop environment by default.
If I install non-GUI server, is there any alternative desktop environment I can install?
Thank you.

Hi,

Cinnamon, MATE and all others was in EPEL repo in version 7.
In EPEL 8, no alternatives Desktops.

A request already sent for XFCE on bugzilla : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1744139

If your desktop environment not available and no request, you can send a request.

The issue you submited has been closed by the maintainer.

And I found this:

https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/stenstorp/MATE/

maybe we can give it a try

Thank you for asking this question. Part of the reason -- among others -- is this one. I currently use KDE 4.x. RHEL has said that KDE will be "deprecated" starting in CentOS 8 and for KDE users installation will be via some repo. My alternative to KDE is Cinnamon, which is very KDE-like.

I HATE GNOME, as a result I am waiting to see what happens between now and the release of say 8.2. I am seriously considering simply jumping ship to say something like Manjaro-KDE, in hopes of finding something as stable like CentOS but is not as bleeding edge as say Fedora.

To whom it may concern,

I would love to see Cinnamon as a GUI option for CentOS (Stream) 8!

Cheers,

Marc
