Centos 8 DVD iso with maximal 4.2GB

While I would agree that most people do prefer a single DVD for installation, I do not agree that most want that install to be "everything" on the install disks. Most of us know that there are going to be tons of updates that need to be done right after install. So we install the bare minimum from the DVD, get the base system up are running, THEN install all the extra stuff via the repos. Installing the extras from the DVD and then updating it via the repos is basically like installing it twice.

Yes, we all read the installation notes.
There are MANY people that absolutely cannot use any USB drive in their computer.
These computers are also NOT connected to the internet.
They also cannot write or read read dual-layer DVD disks.

Thing is, we should all read the notes, they are the instructions or guides as to how to achieve the goal we're seeking. Although I have been caught out many times myself.

One of the main advantages to using Linux has always been that it supports using older hardware. Yes, I and many others, still have older hardware in service. I have an AMD 3800+ still in service here at the house. It does not support USB boot and it still uses PATA drives. The DVD drive does not support dual layer. One of the reasons it is still in service is that it is essentially a "free" machine. I can pick up a used PATA drive locally for a couple of bucks, so even if the seldom used drive dies, I can pick up replacement parts for next to nothing. Finding a PATA drive that supports dual layer might not be so easy.

Almost all drives support reading dual layer disks. It is writing them that is a little more tricky. But hey a quick check on eBay shows a PATA to SATA convertor that would let you connect a brand new SATA DVD drive to your PATA only motherboard is £4 delivered. Though it occurs to me that you could in fact just write it out to an 8GB compact flash card and used a cheap CF to IDE convertor.

Or you could do a network install as I pointed out earlier.

People moaning about lack of single layer DVD boot options frankly need to get their heads out the sand.

Far more concerning is the huge range of SAS and ethernet cards that have been depreciated. I have a whole slew of servers with LSI SAS cards that no longer work, and 10GbE cards that also won't work on CentOS 8. Sure there is elrepo support but for some of my servers running real RHEL for support purposes (third party software only supported on actual RHEL) that's going to be a no go.

I mean perfectly good HP 523SFP (technically QLogic Corp. cLOM8214) 10Gb Ethernet cards no longer supported, and a replacement is going to be a whole lot more expensive than sorting out something that can't deal with a dual layer DVD.

Is it possible to build a CentOS-8-x86_64-DVD.iso with maximal 4.2GB size? In my case it is not possible to use an USB Stick.

Oracle linux used to be smaller (4 GB iso) but their version 8 also is bigger now.
And Springdale 8 only has netinstall at present.
So you are SOL

I have a number of machines which still work, but which do not boot from a usb stick. Why? Who knows? Not me. I am only responding to the idea that it is absurd to imagine that such machines exist. No, it is not absurd to imagine that.
