Well - I've actually had good luck with nvidia drivers - till now. RHEL 8.3 rolled out a large update a week ago with a new kernel and it broke every single machine with Nvidia drivers, regardless of card model/ driver version. Even nvidia-detect now reports:

Code: Select all

$ sudo nvidia-detect
No NVIDIA devices were found.
I don't know when to expect the next update, but I expect it'll be fixed then. It'll be interesting to watch what happens when it gets into CentOS 8 (if it does).

Das Boot!!! If if there is an update of kmod-nvidia within a week or two. In the meantime drop back 10 to the last kernel and punt -- I mean boot!!! Heheheehe. IF RHEL 8.4 is due out soon you'll see in various package names... you'll suddenly start getting a lot of broken package names. In that case you'll simply use the ever useful yum update --exclude=packagename. IF that *is* the case now would be a good time to start backing up the drive in preparation for the rollover.

RHEL 8.4 is already out.

OP has RHEL and has already done the "rollover", so the cat is out of the bag there.

For you, as in user of CentOS Linux 8, now is the time to prepare.

AlmaLinux OS has already released beta of 8.4.

Thanks for the tip. CentOS 7.9 is backed up GOLD on my current worstation; CentOS 8.3...it is on my new workstation that I am still fritzing with (There is still a lot of work that needs to be done and integrating all the drives etc.) but it is now stable, have it more or less configured, complete with KDE 5.18 which I have a love/hate relationship with, and other nifty programs that took a while to install, so will backup the disk, just in case CentOS 8.4 tanks, I can at least get back to 8.3. Hopefully the rollover to 8.4 does not wipe out all those customizations.

Just starting to download Rocky Linux. I'll probably install it on the "slow" SSD as CentOS 8.3 is on the PCIx 4.0 drive (that's a speed demon: Inxi rates it at 63.2 Gb /s -vs- 6 Gb/s for my standard SSD!! And yes I somehow managed to install Inxi on 8.3. Not sure what incantations I did, as it took quite a while to install, so I went to bed).

I have another standard SSD, 250 GB in size, floating around somewhere in here which I can put inside Ocelot and will probably download AlmaLinux to that.

Kernel and header compatibility is already sorted out in the link I cited. You were just too arrogant to check.

Link in above message points to Fedora Nvidia installations. That said, my Nvidia problem on all 3 machines with different cards/setups is solved, at least temporarily (we'll see!). I went to Nvidia and downloaded the drivers for the 3 cards. I disabled nouveau according to Red Hat instructions and ran the drivers from CLI. During installation, their drives asked if I wished to install kmod so it would be rebuilt on subsequent updates - to which I replied 'yes'. Now I just sit and wait till the next kernel and see.

Ah!!! I just got around to updating 8.3... and it broke my machine. I was wondering if I had done something WRONG, but all my other OS's are working. Thanks for the Clue

I have not been on this board in a while. I knew that RHEL 8.4 was out, so I will guess that CentOS 8.4 is now out? When I updated ocelot over the weekend there were a ton of updates, so am I correct to assume that the machine rolled over to 8.4? Right after I updated ocelot CentOS 8.x went out into the weeds. If it is 8.4, it is going to require so playing around with, but right now I am in the process of testing Open SuSE LEAP. and after that Rocky Linux 8.4 stable.
