LTS Kernel 5.4 like CentOS 7?

Post by pjwelsh » 2020/09/16 16:49:43

With CentOS 7, I can install the LTS kernel 5.4 as supported by the CentOS repo "centos-kernel":
yum-config-manager --enable centos-kernel

I only find an LTS kernel under the virt8-xen-common-el8 repo: https://cbs.centos.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=30243

Are there plans to support the LTS kernel as before? I don't really want to add a Xen based repo on my KVM servers.
Thanks

ELRepo ship mainline kernels in their elrepo-kernel repo.

Have used the kernel-ml.
Mainline kernel gets a little crazy. Some workloads like with VirtualBox are not currently possible when using the kernel-ml :(
The stability of the kernel (updates ~1.5 - 2 months) is much appreciated compared to kernel-ml releases (Wednesday of every week it seems).

The centos-kernel one you refer to, as far as I am aware, the existence of that has never been published and it was entirely news to me that it even existed.

Oh, ELRepo also do a kernel-lt that ships a more recent but still LTS upstream kernel.org kernel but I don't think they've picked one yet for CentOS 8 as it there's not much point in having an LTS kernel that's too close to the distro one. You could try asking them (or hope that someone from ELRepo might read this and comment).

BTW, there is no kernel-lt for CentOS 8 for that reason I bet

For now, I was going to attempt to rebuild the CentOS 7 based kernel-5.4 from src.rpm. Sadly, I can't yet find any of them yet.

I was really looking for the actual *.src.rpms that are normally provided by the creation process and included with the repository structure.
I guess the next closest thing may be the .spec file.
Still would like to see if they would publish the *.src.rpms, however.

There are instructions in the wiki for creating your own SRPM from git.c.o.

I do have build capabilities (mostly around building perl modules). I'm not sure if the wiki info mentioned is generic or specific to this kernel build.
I've spent a little time on https://git.centos.org (git.c.o?) without being able to find the wiki info that seems helpful. I have made some google-foo attempts without direct success.

Is there a specific page you are referring too?
