Will PHP 5.4 be supported by CentOS in future for security updates

Post by srbh_17 » 2023/02/05 19:46:38

Our Customer has requested to upgrade php on our Nagios Server(CentOS 7.9). We are running on php 5.4.16-48 and since this version was EOL from PHP hence an upgrade is requested.
Although PHP 5.4 developed by CentOS are getting patches (last update received on Oct 29 17:30:00 2019) as per CentOS Security Backporting Process. I just wanted to confirm if we will be getting packages for php 5.4 in future.

Formally, CentOS does not develop nor backport -- Red Hat does. CentOS 7 simply has what RHEL 7 has.

RHEL 7 has php-5.4.16-48.el7. The EOL of public updates to RHEL 7 is June 30, 2024. That is also EOL for the PHP that is in RHEL 7.
Therefore, CentOS 7 and the php 5.4 in it has EOL June 30, 2024.

https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata writes:
"Extended Life-cycle Support (ELS) is an optional Add-On subscription for certain Red Hat Enterprise Linux subscriptions."

Therefore, if you do purchase RHEL 7 subscription from Red Hat, the ELS for it, and migrate from CentOS 7 to RHEL 7, then you can run PHP 5.4 a bit longer. However, do not expect frequent updates; Red Hat creates security fixes only for what they deem critical.
