networking with MATE

Hello,

I just installed MATE and I don't have the two computer icon in the top panel. Normally I click this and select something under the wired network. I'm running under VMware and I'm able to connect using other desktops. How do I enable the internet?

Try System > Preferences > Internet and Network > Network Connections from the third menu, top left. I get a "Network Connections" box come up, but can't go any further since I don't run NM.

Is network-manager-applet-1.8.6-2.el7.x86_64 installed?

Hi TrevorH,

Yum says network-manager-applet is installed and the latest version.

I found that if I log the user out and switch to gnome classic desktop and enable the internet and then log the user out and switch to mate desktop the icon with the two computers shows up in mate. From there I can connect and disconnect repeatedly. If I reboot I have the same problem.

I'm using MATE and have that package installed but my notification area is on the bottom taskbar.

Hi TrevorH,

I rebooted and checked the bottom taskbar to be sure I didn't miss anything. There is nothing in the bottom taskbar except 4 workspaces that can be selected. Could this be a mate defect? I just installed mate yesterday.

Do you have a notification area on any of your panels now? In mine I have icons for circuit, apcupsd, konversation, remmina, keypass as well as sounds and network icons. If you don't have one now then there'd be nowhere for it to place the icons so perhaps you need to right click one of the taskbars and add it to the panel? It's in the list as Noitification Area.

Hi TrevorH,

The upper panel has Application, places, system, terminal, firefox, file system, time, and sound. It is this panel that the network icon with two terminals appears. The network icon is missing when I first boot. After connecting to the internet in a different desktop and coming back to mate desktop the network icon is there. I have a work around, but it is a pain.
