CentOS 7 Install issues on 2022 Dell Optiplex 7000

Post by WRSomsky » 2022/07/27 17:37:32

I'm trying to install CentOS 7.9 on a new 2022 Dell Optiplex 7000 w/ a new MB/BIOS and 12th gen Intel Core i7 and the installation kernel is failing, apparently somewhere around trying to get networking running.

The install kernel gets to this point

Code: Select all

[ OK ] Started Open-iSCSI
  Starting dracut initqueue hook...
[ 6.######] dracut-initqueue[913] RTNETLINK answers: File exists
[ 132.######] dracut-initqueue[913]: Warning: dracut-initqueue timeout - starting timout secrpts

RHEL 7.9 was released in September 2020. Hence new features, like hardware support for it was selected in Spring 2020.

The 12th gen Intel CPUs and the chipset for them were released Fall 2021, over a year later. The 12th gen has P- and E-cores that need novel software support. Would Intel have shared information of that technology to Linux kernel developers clearly over a year earlier, so much in advance that Red Hat could have added and tested (how?) it into RHEL 7.9?

That seems quite unlikely. Is it possible to disable the E-cores in UEFI? That would rule out one potential problem.

The post got away from me (accidentally hit "post" as opposed to "preview") before I could add that we are moving to Rocky Linux 8 (now possibly 9) but are just a bit shy of that yet. I was hoping to get a user's new workstation up with what he knows for the time being until we're fully ready for the changes that moving to a RHEL-8 based system would bring. It may not be possible.

We are on the same phase; applications still for (CentOS) EL7, but we aim to leap to EL9 (Alma) ASAP.

Our latest workstations (HP Z2 G8) have Intel 11th gen (Xeon W-1350P). That too is "released after 7.9", but thankfully the only feature that was observed missing was network driver (I219-LM [8086:15f9]) but ELRepo has driver for that, so CentOS 7.9 runs on them.

Then we got a laptop. The 7.9 runs on it fine, but touchpad and WiFi were unsupported. Had to install EL8 to it.
