CentOS 7 compatibility with HP EliteDesk 800 G1

Post by Ajt_Cova » 2022/07/20 20:38:55

Hello CentOS Community!

First of all, excuse my ignorance! This is my first IT experience and, well, besides not having any experience I have no IRL support or consulting options.

I have a certain need, for which I must set up a basic CentOS 7-running machine (specifically). Since I am in a low tier developing country I don't have access to a good hardware market, I have to make do with my limited options. For this reason (and my project's budget) I have my eyes set on a HP EliteDesk 800 G1 desktop computer. These are spec'd with i3, i5 or i7 4th gen Intel processors with 4 o 8 Gb of DDR3 RAM (which is as far as my hardware knowledge goes). My questions are:

-Are these HP EliteDesk 800 G1 models compatible with CentOS 7? In case they are, would there be any compatibility differences between the i3, i5, or i7 models with 4 o 8 Gb of RAM?
-In case these models aren't compatible, which specs should I be looking for having such low budget? O what similarly priced desktop models could you recommend? (hoping it's available where I am located)

Thank you for your time,
Kind regards,
Ajt_Cova

CentOS 7 was first released in 2014 so it's a fair bet that anything that was current in 2014 will be supported. It then received various updates through to 2020 that should have added more recent hardware to the supported list. If your target machine is older than about 2019 or 2018 then I would not expect any problems. If it's too old though... then it might not have enough oomph to run at a decent pace. Since Google reckons your target machine is from 2013 I think you'll be OK.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I can confirm that there are no problems running on 800 G1s. We had many of them at my previous place of employment.
