centos 7.9 on AM4 motherboard with Ryzen cpu

Post by ron7000 » 2021/10/04 15:42:13

I am considering building a new computer, for basic internet web surfing and email, don't want to go windows 10.
Want to use CentOS 7.9.

Will centos 7.9 work if I get a $59 Asus prime A320M-K motherboard and a Ryzen 3 cpu ?
Will audio work?
If I get an M.2 (2280) will that work?

If centos 7.9 is a no, will centos 8.x then ?

thanks.

Support for Ryzen processors in el7 is not great. It's better in el8 but still missing a bunch of stuff like the kernel module that tells you what the temperature your processor is. Plus el7 goes out of support in about 2.5 years. I wouldn't use CentOS 8 either as it goes EOL at the end of this year. You could look at Rocky or Alma (new RHEL clones to replace CentOS) or even the free RHEL developer subscription (if you read the T&Cs right and make sure it fits) or there is CentOS Stream which gets updates from the next point release for RHEL before RHEL comes out. Some say that means "beta".
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
