Got Centos 7.8, planning to put it on a Ryzen 5700X system
I want to yank Windows off this machine and go straight to Linux but I hear Centos 8 is still lacking stuff like Mate/Marco and temp sensors among other things.
Has anyone had experience with this cpu and Centos 7.8? Am I going to be sorry, happy or am I in for a lot of trouble to get working?

Re: Got Centos 7.8, planning to put it on a Ryzen 3900X system
I went to Fedora to get everything on my 3700x system supported. CentOS 8 goes EOL at the end of this year so it's not really an alternative. CentOS 7 may work but you won't have a working k10temp module and ECC RAM won't be recognized by the o/s (though it probably still works at the hardware level).
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

What CentOS 7.8 when CentOS 7.9 is the most current? The warranty and liability expired as you read this message. If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces. Practice safe computing. Backup the file before you change it.

Darn, I thought C7 EOL was 2024? I mis-judged that one! Anyway last time I used Fedora it was terrifyingly unstable with regards to installing apps via Yum. Centos is so incredibly stable. Then there's the constant OS replacements/upgrades that wrecked me every time I tried. I was able to move from Centos 6 to 7 fairly easy in comparison.TrevorH wrote: ↑2021/03/09 10:25:23I went to Fedora to get everything on my 3700x system supported. Yes, true, my bad, I just did an update and there it is, 7.9! Does it play well with Ryzens of that level?P_I wrote: ↑2021/03/09 15:45:44What CentOS 7.8 when CentOS 7.9 is the most current? [CentOS-announce] Release for CentOS Linux 7 (2009) on the x86_64 Architecture
Also stupid typos, it's the Ryzen 5700 not 3900. I traded away my 3900 lol
Re: Got Centos 7.8, planning to put it on a Ryzen 5700X system
Yeah, I don't think you want to try a 5xxxX processor with CentOS 7. I've seen reports that it crashes on boot and Red Hat's support of AMD processors is lacking.

C7 EOL remains 2024. CentOS Linux 8 EOL is 2021. CentOS Stream 8 has EOL 2024, presumably.

Okay I'm way out of the loop, C8 EOL is earlier than C7 EOL? What is this Centos Stream I am seeing on the Centos web page? I've been asking all the wrong questions with this thread, it seems. Please excuse me, it's obvious that I've been hiding in a Centos 7 meta-bunker way too long.jlehtone wrote: ↑2021/03/09 19:54:20C7 EOL remains 2024. CentOS Linux 8 EOL is 2021. Re: Got Centos 7.8, planning to put it on a Ryzen 5700X system
Red Hat acquired CentOS back in about 2014 and announced in December last year that they were discontinuing CentOS Linux 8 at the end of 2021, about 8 years early. CentOS 7 will continue until it's correct EOL in 2024.
There is now a CentOS Stream which is "upstream" of RHEL and thus many of us consider it a beta version.
