Kernel Panic with AMD 5800X CPU

Post by johnmaye » 2021/03/06 19:34:52

I upgraded my system which was running centos 7 on a Gigabyte 450 Aorus motherboard from the AMD 2700X CPU to the AMD5800X CPU.
However immediately after starting the Centos Boot I get a Kernel Panic.

I got the same thing with a Gigabyte B550 motherboard. I had actually been running it with a Ryzen 3600X and updated the BIOS from F1 to F12 (latest stable) before swapping the CPU. When I put in the 5800X, the only change was the CPU itself. To keep my system running, I had to back out the CPU swap and return to using the 3600X

This issue was previously reported in the CentOS bug tracker back in December, but there has been no progress there.

For different issues in the past, people have suggested using el-repo to upgrade to a much newer kernel (4.x) if you have to stay on CentOS 7.x. I am reluctant to go down this route since my system is my KVM host that has a bunch of VMs inside it. I am worried that I'd be setting myself up for a conflict between the newer kernel, older KVM implementation and supporting libraries caught somewhere in between. Never mind that I am running CentOS to begin with for mainstream stability.

Have people here tried running more advanced kernels (going from 3.x to 4.x) long term with CentOS 7.x?
