Read external Centos 7 hard disk

Post by xo)mora » 2020/01/23 21:42:34

HI, please can help you me? I need to access a external hard disk with centos7, the device that I'm using is a StatTech. I had been connected a external hard disk with centos 7 to Windows 10 but I can't see the drive.

Please, will you tell me how connect the Centos 7 external hard disk to Windows 10, thanks a lot.

Regards

You mentioned "Centos 7 external hard disk" several times, but it is not clear what that means.

"Hard disk" is unambiguous. "External" almost; connection could be firewire, USB, eSATA, or Ethernet for a NAS.

Hard disk has partition(s) and a partition has a filesystem. Filesystem has files.
connect external hard disk to Windows 10
Sounds like you want to read files from a filesystem with Windows.

Filesystem has a type. For example: FAT, NTFS, ext4, XFS, ZFS, btrfs, exFAT, HPFS, ...
OS has to have support for a filesystem type in order to access filesystems of that type.
If OS does not, then you have to install drivers for the type, if they exists.

You need to know the filesystem type in order to search drivers for it.
The default filesystem type used in CentOS 7 systems is XFS.
I have no idea whether there are XFS drivers for Windows 10.

I just plugged "xfs ext4 windows" into a search engine and found this: https://www.paragon-software.com/home/linuxfs-windows/#. You get 10 days for free, then either have to purchase a license or accept a slowed down version (see the FAQs).

I have no connection with, or experience of, Paragon software, this was found from a search engine and I offer absolutely no opinion about its usefulness.

You have to make sure your disk, whatever it is, is formatted with a filesystem that is accessible to both operating systems. Windows understands FAT in all its many variants and NTFS. Linux understands ext2, ext3, ext4, xfs, and FAT in many variants. Your disk will need to use one of the FAT formats to be accessible on both. You may also be able to make Windows see other linux filesystems by installing third party software as suggested above.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Hi MartinR, I had been use Paragon-software, Windows 10 recognised the Centos 7 hard disk but I couldn't see the files.

Will you have any idea?

As I said, I've no experience of Paragon's offerings. The only suggestion I have left is to get a live CD version of CentOS (or any other recent distribution), boot the system on that and then copy over the files. You can avoid the live boot issue if you have a friend running Linux, but I would hope you've already tried that.
