Help with RT5390 Wireless Drivers

Post by swimshark1988 » 2015/10/20 22:28:39

I have been hunting google for help with the RT5390 wireless adapter and have not found any help for CentOS 7. I have found similar requests for earlier versions and other versions of Linux. I have tried to follow what they did for those OS but the repositories packages they are using are not in the same repositories that CentOS 7 is accessing.

Could someone give me some guidance as to what to do? When I run lspci, it sees the adapter and recognizes it there but there is no wireless option in the GUI nor the terminal.

This is a dual boot laptop. Have been running Windows 7 on it for past few years and wanted to install Linux on it for classes.

Product: HP DV6-6B47DX

Welcome to the CentOS fora.

It would be most useful, for any person attempting to assist, to see the output returned by --

Looking, quickly, on an up to date RHEL 7 system I see --

[Build64R7 ~]$ grep -i 1814 /lib/modules/*/modules.alias | grep -i 5390
/lib/modules/3.10.0-229.11.1.el7.x86_64/modules.alias:alias pci:v00001814d00005390sv*sd*bc*sc*i* rt2800pci
/lib/modules/3.10.0-229.14.1.el7.x86_64/modules.alias:alias pci:v00001814d00005390sv*sd*bc*sc*i* rt2800pci
/lib/modules/3.10.0-229.7.2.el7.x86_64/modules.alias:alias pci:v00001814d00005390sv*sd*bc*sc*i* rt2800pci
[Build64R7 ~]$ modinfo -F firmware rt2800pci
rt2860.bin
[Build64R7 ~]$ find /lib/firmware -name rt2860.bin
/lib/firmware/rt2860.bin
[Build64R7 ~]$

The above tells me that the rt2800pci module is appropriate for your WiFi sub-system and that module, along with its required firmware (rt2860.bin), should be present in your CentOS 7 system.

I am lost. When I run iwconfig it will not show wlan0. I have tried other help from previous versions to no avail. Still nothing.

Searching the RHEL 7 repository, it only shows a kmod-rt2500pci.x86_64

Running modinfo -F firmware rt2800pci shows the rt2860.bin.

What am I missing? It is getting annoying that none of the other forums I find have anything that helps. Just dead ends.

Your interface may not be called wlan0 - run ip a and see if it is called something like wlp1s0
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

CentOS 5 is dead, do not use it.
