IBM X3650

Post by patrick_brosnan » 2015/03/28 07:38:50

HI,
We have been working with Cento6.6 installed upon IBM x3650M4s without any problem but found we could not install Centos 7 on the system. We suspect RAID driver issue but we are not certain. I also found an IBM website giving a matrix of compatibility with free O/S and it showed Centos 7.0 as being incompatible (no further info).
My question is
a) Is there a known problem with Centos 7.0 upon IBM x3650M4?
b) Has support for RAID drivers been dropped between Centos 6 and 7?
c) Has anyone succeeded in installing Centos 7.0 upon x3650M4?

We did successfully install Red Hat 7.1. Is there a date for the availability of Centos 7.1?

Thanks
Patrick

Yes, many RAID and SCSI controller drivers were deprecated between CentOS 6 and 7. I am not aware that any support has been brought back between 7.0 and 7.1 but you are welcome to try the 7.1 media when it's released. The only date that anyone can give is "soon".
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Thanks Trevor, I was speaking to our Linux expert Jim Hague earlier and he said Centos should have pretty much all of the drivers included in RH equivalent releases. Therefore he is confident that if RH 7.1 installs upon the X3650 then Centos 7.1 should install on the X3650. However I suspect that this may not be the case as I have seen problems installing Oracle Linux 5.7 (RH based release) upon HP servers when the RH 5.7 did install. I would be very interested in knowing whether Centos 7.1 will have the same drivers exactly as RH 7.1. Is there anyone out there on the forum who can confirm whether that statement is true or not?
many thanks for any input on this

CentOS is built from the exact same source packages that RHEL is and uses the same configuration options. Everything should be identical apart from branding issues (i.e s/Redhat/CentOS/g)

Thanks Trevor, That is good news. So if RH 7.1 installs upon the x3650 then so should the Centos 7.1. Exactly what I wanted to hear.

Hi Trevor, Foot note to all of this is that we could load both 7.1 and 7.0 upon X3650. My colleague could install it using a DVD but the USB. So Centos 7.0 does have the drivers for RAID upon x3650. I hope this helps some other people.
Thanks again for your time.
