Threadripper PRO 3975X

Post by nevareka » 2021/05/07 15:41:21

Hi,
I'm thinking of building a machine for VFX. Will use Maya, Nuke, etc. Nuke officially supports only CentOS 7.6.
My possible setup AMD® Ryzen Threadripper PRO 3975X on ASUS® Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI with NVIDIA® GeForce RTX 3090.
I first worry if it can run Linux, any advice?
Thank you very much!

Well you don't want to run 7.6, that much is sure. For a start, it was released 2018-10-30 but the 3975X didn't come out until at least the 2nd half of 2020 so 7.6 definitely won't have been tested on it and there won't be any support for it. Not to mention that https://access.redhat.com/errata/ shows at least 25 critical severity security fixes since that date that will not be fixed in 7.6. There will be many more that are "only" Important and lower.

The only supported version of CentOS 7 is 7.9.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Nuke officially supports only CentOS 7.6.
Where is such claim? What in later releases breaks it?

RHEL 7.6 EUS ends May 31, 2021. Nuke has to change their policy soon, or there will be no OS to run it on.

Thank you for your quick replies.

So what would you recommend will work the best? Please advice what should I ask supplier to install?
Latest 7 or go for 8 or different distro?

Nuke info is here: https://learn.foundry.com/nuke/content/ ... linux.html
=============
Qualified Operating Systems
• CentOS 7.4 (64-bit), or later
Note: The VFX Platform 2019 upgrade includes library versions that are only compatible with CentOS 7.4, or later. Nuke 12 is qualified on the Centos 7.4, 7.5, and 7.6 distributions.
Other operating systems may work, but have not been fully tested.

Key words there: "or later"

Moved to the CentOS 7 forum since this is not about CentOS 8 (mostly)

Thank you for moving to the CenrOS 7. I guess the question remains, will 7 work with 3975X and WS WRX80E-SAGE? Or I better use something else?

did you ever get an answer to this? i'm looking to build the same system and only need centos 7 on long enough to do an update to 8 as i would like to update my current setup, but have already dismantled it. i really just want to make sure it's possible.

Since there is NO UPGRADE from CentOS 7 to 8, you are better off starting from scratch. And since CentOS 8 goes EOL tomorrow, 31/12/2021, there's no point in installing 8 at all. You should skip CentOS 8 completely and go straight to Rocky or Alma Linux or to OEL or to RHEL.
