I've attempted to install VLC several times. Each failed. What's up with that??
I feel like I've taken a trip back in time. CentOS has some real issues... keyboard bounce, being one. Not to hurt anyone's feelings but this is like 25 years ago... so many things are really archaic compared to Linux Mint for instance.
Red Hat failed to keep my interest and the server is so featureless that it is hard to use. Perhaps this is why it's not hacked much... all of the conveniences are gone.
I don't know guys... how you can tollerate the time machine -25 years
The VLC issue is but one of many...stuff that it readily available in other Linux formats should be available here without all of the drama.

Re: Disappointed that VLC won't install as per instructions
I got a working copy by "sudo yum install vlc" from the rpmfusion-free-updates repo. I've never tried installing any other way.
Re: Disappointed that VLC won't install as per instructions
You will need both EPEL and rpmfusion third party repos installed and enabled to be able to do this. Red Hat do not ship vlc as part of RHEL so CentSO does not ship it either. I believe that it uses patent encumbered codecs etc that make it ineligible to be included in RHEL.
Also, if you are using CentOS 7 (the forum section you posted in) then you should be aware that it dates from 2014 and is in the last 18 months of its life cycle. Linux Mint is from 2022. Not really a fair comparison.

The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

How could we know? You did not show us how you did fail.
Easy. This one has many more conveniences than the systems that I had 25 years ago.
Linux distros do differ. What would be the point to have multiple, identical distros?
(Then again, for example AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux look very similar distros. Nevertheless, their difference is pivotal for some users.)
