Accidently changed permissions of entire filesystem

Post by stripie » 2021/12/07 03:31:12

I was attempting to change file permissions for every file in the current directory but accidentally changed the permissions for the entire filesystem. While booting it displays the error "systemd-journald: Failed to get machine id: Permission denied" (https://i.imgur.com/yGs9b4c.png). It won't let me type so I can't attempt to reset any of the permissions. Not sure if there is anything to do other than a full reset but if there is any other options that would be great.

You could try booting the install media in Rescue mode (it's an option off the initial Troubleshooting menu) and attempting to repair things from there. Your best bet is probably to attempt to run something like rpm --root /mnt/sysimage --restore -a

You might also want to back up any valuable data on the system while you're there and before you make any changes.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.
