I have an (also-retired) work buddy now in his 80's who uses Windows. My machines are (weekly updated) CentOS 7.
Previously, I used TeamViewer to access his (2) machines (a laptop and a desktop). He's not "computer savvy".
Teamviewer (free) incorrectly "decided" that I was using their product for commercial purposes. I jumped through their hoops until I needed to print-out a 'declaration', sign it, and mail it to them in Germany. (I even researched buying their product to get rid of this headache - HOLY POOP! We're retired.)

Is there free software for me on CentOS 7, and him on Windows 10 that would help me NOT have to drive 45 minutes each way (in now snowy weather) to make him a bookmark?

Re: need remote control cross-platform software
Have you considered using VNC?
Re: need remote control cross-platform software
i never used it but i know hamachi is free for home user then you don´t have to deal with nat, dynamic IPs and firewalls
if you are accessing windows machines from linux machines, remote desktop is the best solution ever, then you pass it through a hamachi vpn
