Getting Sound Alerts When Using VPN

Cent OS 7

GNOME 3

I am using Windows Remote Desktop to VPN into a computer using Cent OS 7.

I would like to get sound alerts for Pidgin. That is turned on in Pidgin and in Settings > Notifications Pidgin > Sound Alerts

I noticed that the volume control in Settings > Sounds > Sound Effects is grayed out.

Could that be the issue?

How would I enable it?
CentOS 7.6.180
GNOME-CLASSIC 3.28.2
