Installing a mail relay server

Post by ddolecki108 » 2020/07/30 20:31:20

Hi,

I have been tasked with installing a mail relay server. I am new to postfix. I am good with the steps mentioned herein:
https://www.linuxbabe.com/mail-server/s ... tp-servers

I am not sure about the:
# outbound relay configurations
smtp_sasl_auth_enable = yes
smtp_sasl_password_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd
smtp_sasl_security_options = noanonymous
smtp_tls_security_level = may
header_size_limit = 4096000

which password goes in /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you.

the password for the email account you are using to perform the mailing.

my sasl file looks similar to this:

Code: Select all

[mail.servername.com]:587 name@somesigns.com:thepassword
Incidentally, when I set up my relay settings, my system started sending system emails out (the ones to root) and they'd all error out because there was no root email account at that domain. I had to edit /etc/aliases and add to the bottom:

Code: Select all

root:   name@somesigns.com
The dream is to someday discover how to stop the system from sending them out at all.
Remember - importing/building packages will likely "byte you in the butt" come update time, long after you'd forgotten you did that! Use repos whenever possible.

You could set your alias to /dev/null. For example, edit your /etc/aliases and set

Code: Select all

root: /dev/null
then re-run "newaliases" to update the aliases db with the new change.
