exFAT support from nux-dextop seems to work well for me and it uses fuse. Since it's the only filesystem shared between linux and Windows (apart from the more restricted fat/vfat which have size limits), exFAT support seems like a reasonable way to go.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

What is the command to install nux-dextop?

You'll need to google for it then find his nux-release rpm and install that which will give you access to the rest of the contents.

Thanks to your help and patience, I now have the usb drive mounted! However, do to not having a full awareness of naming customs, possiblely should mount it to a different place.

I created /usb and mounted it as

mount /dev/sdb1 /usb/

Would the rsync command be

rsync -av --delete /var/www/html/ /usb/html

Suggestion welcomed...
